PHOTO LEGACY

Andy Sweet

Hello

Hi, Andrew John Sweet

Andrew John Sweet was a young photographer living and working in Miami Beach in the late 1970s. His life and his art were cut tragically short when he was murdered on October 16, 1982. Andy left an extensive body of work that exhibits a level of creative maturity far beyond his years. His photographs are a testimony to a rich but often overlooked period of Miami Beach’s cultural heritage.

Above is a picture of Andy’s tombstone, with a beautiful sentiment written by his father, Chick Sweet. While it’s a fine memorial, it’s kind of private, and a long way from the places he pictured so well.

A little over a year ago we had a big campaign to get a street in Miami Beach named for Andy. There was a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of people really got behind the project, but the city council ultimately decided that streets can only be renamed for… sports figures.
